Crafty Base-Running Helps Pella Softball Achieve Success in 2011

Power hitting certainly played a big role in the success of the Pella softball team this past season, but a closer look at the Lady Dutch shows that the way they moved runners around the bases and their efficiency with those runners in scoring position really set Pella apart from their opponents. In employing a combination of bunts, slap hits and disciplined at bats, the Pella softball team had a team on-base percentage of .432.
With those runners in place, Head Coach Krista DeMeulenaere had her athletes executing base-path banditry at a rate the left opposing pitchers rattled and coaches with their heads in their hands. In all, Pella stole 72 bases in just 74 attempts this past season, led by speedster Whitney Williams, whose 47 thefts ranked third in all of Class 3A.
While putting runners in place to score, the rest of the Lady Dutch roster held up their end of the deal, as Pella led the Little Hawkeye Conference with 145 RBIs.
The Lady Dutch finished the season with an overall record of 20-8 and reached the Class 3A Regional Finals.
