Volleyball practices officially begin for Iowa High Schools on Monday, and the Pella volleyball team is finding itself making some adjustments on the fly as they get the 2011 season started.  Several days of heavy rainfall in June caused flooding in Pella’s main gymnasium, causing extensive damage to the wooden floor and forcing it to need replacement.

Athletic Director Dale Otte says while the project is crunched for time, the district is hopeful for things to be in place in the near future.

“Currently the gym is down to the cement floor, and the [new] floor has been ordered.  We’re hoping that the floor can be in and finished at the end of the month for our first volleyball game,” said Otte.

“We’re looking at some designs right now and just kind of holding our breath a little bit and making some plans for practices and other activities to make sure we can accommodate them in other spaces.”

Pella High School does have another, smaller gymnasium adjacent to the main facility, but with other programs also jockeying for time, a temporary solution has been utilizing the gymnasiums at the nearby Pella Middle School and Madison Elementary School buildings.
