The third-annual Coach Schipper Memorial Golf Tournament will be held next month in Pella. Travis Thompson, one of the organizer’s of the event, says the idea had originated over a dozen years ago when a group of Central graduates formed the Dan Hocker Memorial Tournament in honor of a beloved colleague that passed away suddenly.

He says when that tradition concluded, he and some fellow alumni seized the opportunity to continue the golf tournament in honor of their beloved football coach.

“After ten years of doing it, the group of guys decided that they weren’t going to host the tournament anymore, so myself, Mark Kacmarynski, Shawn DeWaard and Chad Klein decided that we were going to continue on with the tradition of having a golf tournament in association with Homecoming weekend,” said Thompson.

“We thought, what a better person to have it in honor of than Coach [Ron] Schipper. He influenced us dramatically over the four years that we were at Central.”

Thompson says there is still time to register for the tournament, which costs $80 per golfer, and is being moved up from Homecoming weekend to September 9th. To register, or find out more about the tournament, go online to the “Alumni” page at Central.edu and click on “upcoming events”.

Since its inception two years ago, the Coach Schipper Memorial Golf Tournament has already received $36,000 in contributions toward the Ron Schipper Memorial Fund.
