I’ve interviewed Ann Visser and her students at Pella High several times over the years, and I have always been impressed by the positive energy that permeates her classroom. She and her students produce an award winning newspaper and yearbook that serves the school and the community very well. I asked Ann about how students juggle all of the commitments. She made a number of points that are of general interest regarding how to balance schoolwork and extracurricular activities.

Learning time management is critical. Students learn it from each other, from their teachers, parents and others in the community.

Students need to find things they are interested in, and commit to them.

Commitment is critical. If you say you are going to do something, do it.

Balance is necessary.

And finally, let them have time for themselves–let them be kids.
