19 year old California driver Kyle Larson doesn’t consider himself a non wing driver, but one could easily be fooled as Larson was perfect all night and won the USAC Ultimate Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa Tuesday night, fresh off his win at last weeks Bellville Midget Nationals.

Larson was competing for the first time in the famed Hoffman 69 car and swept his heat, his qualifier and won the 30 lap A Main claiming the $15,000 prize, handing the team their first win since May of 2010. Larson started outside row one and led the first half of the race running the high side of the track, but on a rubbered down track Sunday’s USAC Non Wing Nationals winner Brady Bacon found the bottom and took the lead on lap fourteen. On lap sixteen Dustin Morgan flipped hard into the turn three fence and was transported to Mahaska Hospital for observation. On the re start Larson got past Bacon and looked to be cruising to victory when a caution flag flew on the white flag lap for a flat tire on Bryan Clausen. Clausen was attempting to come from the rear after accepting a challenge from promoter Terry McCarl at the start of the race to give up his row two starting spot for a shot at an extra $5000 to win, $1000 for a top three and $100 for each car passed. He would finish 22nd . Larson then held off Bacon on a green white checker finish to earn his first Ultimate Challenge win. Bacon was second followed by Dave Darland in third, Shane Cottle came from sixteenth to fourth and Jerry Coons Jr completed the top five. Hunter Scheurenberg, Coleman Gullick, Tracy Hines, Hud Cone and Damian Gardner rounded out the top ten.

Heat winners included Clauson, Robert Ballou, Bacon and Larson. Qualifier races were won by Larson, Levi Jones, Chris Windom and Darland and Cottle claimed the B Main.

Action now shifts back to the Knoxville Raceway for opening night of the 51st annual Good Year Knoxville Nationals tonight. You can hear live coverage starting with Live Trackside at 6pm central time and flag to flag coverage at 7:30pm on KNIA/KRLS and www.kniakrls.com
