The athletic programs at Central College got a jump on the weekend with plenty of action on Friday…
Led by a second-place finish from Sarah Paulson, the Central College women’s golf team held a first-round lead at their own Central Fall Invitational Friday.
Paulson fired an 83, while Knoxville native Kaurie Kincaid fired a 91 to land in tenth place, and Pella High graduate Kelsey Van Tasell followed close behind in 17th place with a 96.
The six-team, 36-hole invitational concludes Saturday.
A pair of three-game sweeps on Friday has the Central College volleyball team off to a strong start at the University of Chicago Gargoyle Classic. The Dutch rolled past Benedictine University 25-22, 25-21, 25-16 and Wesleyan University 25-23, 25-19, 25-18.
Central’s offense was firing on all cylinders in both matches, while Pella High graduate Chelsea Greiger was leading the defense from her libero position with a total of 40 digs.
Saturday the Dutch square off against Whittier College and NAIA Trinity Christian College. Whittier has a 2-8 overall mark and Trinity is 10-4.
The Central College men’s tennis team had four players turn in strong performances in the opening day of the Iowa Conference Individual Tournament on Friday.
Kyle Freischlag, Collin Schares, Seth Harris, and Tim Kahl all reached the third round, but only Kahl advanced to Saturday’s finals – coming through the B Flight. He’ll meet Luther’s Dan Warden for the B Flight crown Saturday morning. In doubles play, Central’s two teams won a combined three matches before bowing out.
The tournament was only the third outing of the season for the Central men’s tennis team, who will complete their abbreviated fall schedule on Wednesday at Simpson College.
