As we get closer to October, hummingbirds are still migrating south for the winter. Marion County Naturalist Marla Mertz says that if you have a hummingbird feeder, it’s important to keep it out through at least the first week of October for those late-arriving hummingbirds. Mertz says there’s an old myth that says hummingbirds will stay up north if you leave your feeder out too late and freeze during the winter. She says that’s just a myth, as hummingbirds innately will continue on their journey south. There’s no harm in leaving those feeders out this next week so the last group of birds are well fed.
