The Central College football team scored 28 unanswered points to turn a 9-9 halftime deadlock into a 37-9 victory over Luther Saturday afternoon in Pella in the Iowa Conference opener.

The Dutch offense spent much of the first half around midfield or in Norse territory, but couldn’t find the big spark.  It finally came on special teams midway through the third quarter on a dazzling Mike Furlong punt return.  Three plays later, Central quarterback Nate Snead scrambled in from nine yards out, breaking the 9-9 tie and giving the Dutch a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Snead had hit Pella native Cory Nikkel on a 4-yard scoring strike in the second quarter, then hit lanky receiver Ben Lechtenberg on a 35-yard TD late in the third.  He also added a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth, and freshman running back Josh Osborn capped the scoring with a one-yard plunge.

Nate Snead finished with 130 yards rushing as the Dutch racked up 275 yards on the ground, and he was 8-of-20 passing for 108 yards.   Keith Rush and Seth Carson each had 11 tackles as the Dutch put together a dominating defensive performance in improving to 2-and-1 on the season.
