Central College Weekend Recap

In addition to the football team and women’s golf squad, the Central College men’s golf team, women’s tennis team, and both soccer squads were in action over the weekend.

The Central College men’s golf team tied for eighth in a strong 18-team field after day one of the Twin Cities Golf Classic Saturday. Central and No. 3-ranked St. John’s each shot 310. Justin Livingston led the Dutch with a three-over 75 at the Links of Northfork and is tied for 10th in the individual standings. Concordia-Moorhead fired a 294 for a 4-stroke lead over No. 19-ranked Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The tournament continued Sunday, with Central jumping two spots to share sixth place through two rounds of the 54-hole tournament. After shooting a 310 in the opening round, the Dutch carded a 304 to tie with Nebraska Wesleyan. Meanwhile No. 18 Wisconsin-Eau Claire overtook Saturday’s leader, Concordia-Moorhead for first place. Brent Goodenow led the Dutch with an even-par 72 to leap from 38th place to ninth in the individual standings. Monday’s final round is played at the Rush Creek Golf Club at Maple Grove, Minn. The par-72 has hosted three LPGA Tour events and the 2004 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.

The Central College men’s soccer team confirmed its status among the leaders in the Iowa Conference Saturday, battling to a 3-3, double-overtime tie with No. 7-ranked Loras College.
The Dutch and the Duhawks packed all the scoring into the first 45 minutes, taking the 3-3 mark into halftime and fighting a defensive battle in the second half. Central is now 8-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the Iowa Conference. They’ll be back on the pitch Wednesday, traveling to Indianola for match with Simpson College.

With three quick first-half goals, defending Iowa Conference champion Loras College grabbed an early lead it never gave up in a 5-1 women’s soccer decision over Central College Saturday. The Duhawks notched goals in the 12th, 17th, and 30th minutes before the Dutch got one back. Central was out-shot 22-3. They dip slightly to 9-4 overall and 2-2 in the Iowa Conference, while Loras is 11-2 overall and 4-0 in league play. Up next for the Central women is a home match on Wednesday against Luther College.

The Central College women’s tennis team suffered a 5-2 defeat to Simpson College Saturday in the Iowa Conference team tournament fifth-place match. Coming off a winless day against Wartburg Friday, the Dutch pushed three matches into tie-breaking sets, but were unable to come away with wins in any. With three singles wins, Simpson clinched the team victory and the remaining matches were called. Saturday was the season’s final dual meet for the Dutch, who finish the 2011 campaign with a 6-9 record. The squad will be in action October 14-15 for the Iowa Conference individual tournament in Cedar Rapids.
