Downtown Knoxville businesses are eligible for grant money as part of the Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District, or SSMID, fund. Dr. Larry Formanek, who sits on the committee that oversees the funds, says that business on the square, one block west and east on Robinson and Main Streets, and half a block north and south on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Streets are all eligible. The money is to be used to improve the façade of the building. Formanek says that currently, the fund contains $25,000. Businesses can apply to get up to half of their project paid for. Contact the Chamber for more information.
