This week is National Midwifery Week. Megan Day-Suhr is a consumer advocate for midwifery care in Iowa. She says that midwifery offers a more personal type of care during the pregnancy and leading up to delivery. This includes nutritional care, individualized prenatal care, and counseling. She comments that midwifery care is very hands off. Midwives believe that birth is natural process, and there should rarely be interventions such as epidurals and cesareans. Day-Suhr adds that there are no midwives in the hospitals in Marion County, but there is a push occurring to open up more local access to that care.
