With both teams planning to make return trips to the State Cross Country Meet, the Pella High girls and boys squads are making their final preparations this week, with the District/Regional meet just a few days away. While the Dutch are undoubtedly focusing on the physical elements they’ll need to be successful, they’re also emphasizing the psychological aspects of the race.

Pella head coach Doug Cutler says visualizing what it will take to be successful is a skill that he wants his athletes to be able to take with them in areas of their life other than running.

“That’s one of those things that we really try to stress to take with them outside of running,” says Cutler.

“We do that with running, and then ask, ‘can you visualize the next test you’re going to take in class?’ ‘Can you visualize what it means to be a good employee?’ If you think about those things before they happen, you can handle adversity, you can handle challenges, you can handle changes that occur in your life because you’ve already visualized yourself in those situations.”

The Pella country teams run again at Pine Knolls Country Club in Knoxville for their District/Regional Meet on Thursday.
