The Pella High football team was able to slow down a vaunted Keokuk offense, and amassed nearly 400 yards of their own en route to a 40-14 win in a game heard live last night on www.kniakrls.com.

After stopping the Chiefs on the opening possession of the game, Pella broke out a halfback pass from Austin Fuller to Jace Ver Steeg for 48 yards on their first play, which set up a Fuller 11-yard touchdown run. Keokuk got a 13-yard TD pass from Gabe Vandenberg to Kevin Jennings, and led 7-6 before the Little Dutch took control.

Sam Davis scored on runs of 2 and 3 yards, then a little misdirection broke on a 42-yard touchdown run by Pella’s Josh De Waard broke the game wide open. It gave the Little Dutch a 27-6 lead to take into the locker room, and it never got closer than that.

Grant Gustafson and Davis had second half touchdown runs of 1 and 2 yards, respectively, sandwiched around a 3-yard score from Keokuk’s Matt Nye.

Fuller finished with 93 yards to lead a Little Dutch ground game that racked up 216 yards, and De Waard finished 9-of-12 passing for 129 yards. Trevor Wood was the leading receiver with 4 catches for 80 yards, and he also intercepted two passes on defense.

Pella is now 6-1 on the season, and 5-0 in Class 3-A District 7. They’ll play at Fairfield next week in a battle of undefeated district teams on 92.1 KRLS.
