After putting up 80 points in their home opener against Albia, it seems apparent that the Pella Christian girls basketball team’s offense is in good shape.  That’s the exact mentality that head coach Kevin Van Maanen is taking as well, as he’s had his team spending this week trying to improve their defense.

“The number one thing [for us] is to play aggressive defense.  That’s something we’ve been talking about is to be more aggressive on the defensive end, forcing turnovers, [and] using our team speed,” says Van Maanen.

“That’s our strength this year.  We’re not overly big in many areas, so we’ve got to use our team speed to the best of our abilities.”

Van Maanen says that doesn’t mean that there aren’t parts of the offense that need improving, but rather that he expects his athletic defense to lead the team in forcing easier opportunities to put up points at the offensive end of the floor.

The Lady Eagles are 1-1 overall entering Friday’s home game with Roland-Story.
