Wednesday is the final day of National Diabetes Awareness Month. Courtney Slater is a dietitian at Knoxville Hospital and Clinics. She says that there are two main types of diabetes. Type I is an auto-immune disorder where the body stops making insulin. It is not preventable. Type II, Slater says, is a deficiency of insulin. Slater says though your genetic makeup may make you more susceptible to Type II, you can help prevent it with exercise and a diet high in fiber. Slater says symptoms of diabetes include fatigue, increased thirst and urination, and unintentional weight loss.
