Emotions can be overwhelming for both the victorious and the defeated in a playoff football game, but a pair of high-class programs walked off the field in Monroe this past Monday night, as PCM fell 41-14 to West Marshall in the 2A Quarterfinals.

Mustangs’ head football coach Greg Bonnett says while his team very much wanted to continue their historic run, they handled themselves very well in defeat; something he was very proud to see.

“Our guys all really wanted to continue to play, I mean we were having a really fun time. We’re missing it, but I think the guys took the loss with great character,” said Bonnett.

“I told our guys at the beginning of the year, ‘the one thing that you can do to truly disgrace everything I’ve tried to teach you is to over-react when things go wrong,’ and I’ll tell you, not a single one of our kids did anything like that. I’m proud of them for that. They kept their emotions in check; they handled [the loss to West Marshall] like quality young men, and I was just really proud to see that.”

Bonnett added that West Marshall was a gracious winner as well, offering sincere words of encouragement and compliments to his players after the game.

The PCM football team notched a school-best 11-1 record in 2011 – Bonnett’s first as head coach.
