It was a bittersweet end to the season for the PCM football team after a 41-14 Quarterfinal loss Monday night to West Marshall in Monroe. For the first time since the Prairie City and Monroe districts merged, the Mustangs finished with a perfect regular season record. PCM was also able to win two playoff games.

Still, first-year head coach Greg Bonnett – who began his career with 11 straight wins – wanted more. Bonnett said while West Marshall played well, he believes that his squad could have been right there with them.

With the loss, PCM finished its season with an 11-1 record and will say goodbye to an outstanding senior class. Tailback Hutch Burns went out in style, capping off a 1500-yard season with a 91-yard performance Monday. He and fellow senior quarterback Joel Wiggins carried the football over 20 times and helped control the clock in the first half.

After the Trojans scored to take an early lead in the first half, PCM was able to tie it up on the next possession with a 2-yard touchdown run by Burns. After forcing a three and out, the Mustangs took the lead on a 75 yard pass play from Wiggins to Sean O’Conner

The lead didn’t last long, however, as West Marshall went on a 34-point run from late in the first quarter until late in the fourth quarter to propel itself to the State Semifinals. The Trojans will play Spirit Lake next week.
