At 5-1 overall, the Pella Christian girls basketball team is off to a strong start to the season, but the team’s success hasn’t just come from the team’s starting five. Eagles’ head coach Kevin Van Maanen says the depth of his bench has really provided a spark in several games so far.
“We’ve been rotating some players in to give them a feel for the game, and they’ve done a nice job when they get an opportunity to play. So it’s nice that we can have players come off the bench and not lose too much and keep things rolling for us,” said Van Maanen.
“Hopefully that will continue. That’ll help us a lot, and it also helps out in practice when we have that much depth. It allows us to really go hard in practice and get in better shape.”
One of Pella Christian’s leading scorers – Paige Engbers – comes off the bench for the Eagles, and they’ve also gotten strong contributions from Sami Veenstra, Miranda Spurgeon and Lauren Jungling, among others. The Pella Christian girls resume competition next Friday against Newton.
