A balanced night on offense earned the Pella Christian girls basketball team their fifth straight win, as the Lady Eagles defeated Martensdale-St. Mary’s 66-35 at home last night. Head Coach Kevin Van Maanen said the improvement from last Friday’s game at Grinnell made a noticeable difference.

“I thought we had a little better flow. It just seemed like [at] Grinnell it was a struggle all night to get any type of offensive flow. It really starts with our defense, and I thought we did a much better job against Martensdale [St. Mary’s] with our defense, and that kind of created our offense,” said Van Maanen.

“That’s something we have to keep working at is getting better on defense to help create our offense, but at the same time we’ve still got to work on our half-court offense and get a little bit smoother.”

Jasmin Schelhaas and Paige Engbers each scored 12 points to lead the Pella Christian charge, as the team built a 31-16 halftime lead and were never seriously challenged in the second half.

The Lady Eagles are 5-1 overall and 2-0 in Little Hawkeye Conference play entering the Christmas break.
