President Franklin D. Roosevelt described December 7th as, “a day that will live in infamy.” 70 years ago today the US Navy fleet was attacked at Pearl Harbor by Japan. Over 2,400 United States service members were killed in the surprise attack and many more were wounded. The attack resulted in mutual declarations of war between Japan and the USA, and soon thereafter the USA’s entrance into WWII. Gary Gezel, a Pella veteran of the European theatre told KNIA/KRLS News that the most important thing to remember about WWII was that the war was supported by the whole nation, unified in purpose. Iowa Governor Terry Branstad has ordered that all flags be flown at half staff in observance of the holiday.
