North Polk proved to be a very worthy opponent on their home court last night for the PCM basketball teams, as the girls were handed a 63-42 setback, and the boys barely escaped with a 65-63 win.
The girls game saw the Comets build a sturdy lead through the first three quarters of play, ultimately finishing with a 16-6 fourth quarter advantage to put the game away, as the Comets dropped the Mustang girls to 11-9 overall and 8-8 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.
The boys game featured plenty of late-game drama, much of which the Mustangs brought upon themselves. After digging themselves out of a first-half hole and taking a six-point lead into the final frame, the PCM boys watched a double-digit lead shrink to just two points in the game’s final seconds. With Scott Bruxvoort – the team’s best free-throw shooter on the bench after fouling out – and Nate Vande Wall out of commission with injury; the rest of the Mustangs hit a cold streak at the charity stripe, while the Comets knocked down a flurry of field goals and free throws of their own.
North Polk had two chances at a game-winning basket in the final eight seconds, but came away empty-handed on both tries to allow PCM to hang on for the win. Sean O’Connor hit a pair of key fourth-quarter threes on his way to a 21-point performance – leading the Mustangs in scoring – while Scott Bruxvoort added 17. PCM has now won 12 straight games and carries a 16-2 overall mark and a 14-1 league record into another conference game on Tuesday at Gilbert.
