Pella Basketball Teams Host Grinnell Tonight

Pella High continues a six-game home stretch tonight with a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader against Grinnell.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Dutch aim to bounce back from their first conference loss of the season against a Tigers team that head coach Jerod Garland says always plays his girls tough.

“We asked the girls, ‘what do you think of when you think of Grinnell,’ and what they mentioned was scrappy and tough to play against,” said Garland. “So that’s what we’re thinking about, is just trying to find a way to out-fight and out-scrap another team that plays pretty good defense.”

The Pella girls are 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while Grinnell is 1-7 overall, with their lone win coming over Knoxville.

The boys game could be pivotal in the conference race, as both squads are undefeated in league play. Little Dutch head coach Mark Core says the Tigers have a lot of weapons that his team will try and disarm.

“The trouble with Grinnell is they’ve got multiple weapons, and we’ll be trying to figure out little things we can do to slow them down,” said Core. “You do not stop a team that’s as multi-talented as Grinnell, but if we can take one or two things away from them, then we’ll have a chance to win.”

The Pella boys are 4-3 overall after a loss to PCM on Saturday, but all four wins have been against Little Hawkeye Conference opponents. Grinnell is 6-3 and 3-0 in conference play.
