Pella High’s basketball teams picked up a pair of wins over Norwalk for the second time this season, as the Lady Dutch notched a 48-45 overtime win, and the boys stymied the Warriors in a 59-42 runaway.
The Pella and Norwalk girls battled back and forth for all four quarters of regulation with neither team leading by more than five points at any given point, but in the end Pella pulled off a thrilling 48-45 win in overtime Friday night thanks to some clutch baskets down the stretch by Katie Sunderman. Norwalk looked to be in control as they held a 41-38 lead late in regulation forcing Pella to foul, but in three trips to the free throw line the Warriors couldn’t connect. Then with just 10 seconds remaining Katie Sunderman, who was 0-8 from the field, drained a three pointer to tie the game and force overtime.
Early in the overtime period Sunderman struck again. Following a steal by Kim Korver, Sunderman was fouled as she connected on a break away layup and hit the free throw to put Pella ahead for good. Pella out rebounded Norwalk 38-23, thanks in part to Regan Cooper’s 16 rebound effort to go along with 12 points offensively. Bailey Vande Weerd led in the scoring column with 13 points as Pella won their second straight game and improved to 8-4 overall and 5-2 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. They travel to PCM tonight.
The Pella boys were monsterous on defense as they beat Norwalk 59-42 last night. The game was nowhere near as close as the final score may indicate however, as Pella was nearly perfect from the opening tip jumping out to a 14-2 lead after one quarter and lead 30-9 at halftime. The Little Dutch out rebounded the Warriors 25-12 in the first half and forced 12 turnovers while only committing two turnovers.
Pella held Norwalk’s leading scorer, Carson Miller, scoreless on the night. Jace Versteeg led all scorers with 17 points for Pella as they improved to 8-4 overall and 6-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.
