Governor Branstad has proposed a package of education reforms. Pella School District Superintendent Greg Ebeling tells KNIA/KRLS News that the governor’s reform plans are mixed. One proposal that’s drawn criticism in the state is to hold third graders back who can’t read well enough. Ebeling says that he thinks the effect of that sort of legislation in Pella would be minimal. He worries that the rule might be overly arbitrarily applied, and focus more on the penalization aspect, instead of helping children catch up. He also tells KNIA/KRLS that he hopes that any school reform legislation will remain a comprehensive plan, instead of having items picked and chosen.
