A packed gymnasium clad in pink for the shared “Hoops for Hope” night saw a pair of top-notch basketball games between Pleasantville and Martensdale-St. Mary’s, with the Blue Devils claiming a narrow 34-31 win over the Trojans in the opener, and Pleasantville earning the split with a 62-54 win in the nightcap.
As the score would indicate, the girls game was all about defense. The Trojans were able to slow down the Martensdale-St. Mary’s offense well, but had just as hard of a time finding their own opportunities to put the ball in the basket. Kennedy Core would again lead the Pleasantville girls, putting up 12 points in the loss. The Trojans are now 3-9 in Pride of Iowa Conference play and 4-13 overall.
Colin Thomas put up 19 points and Hunter Van Haalen added 15 to help lead the Pleasantville boys to their eight-point win over the visiting Blue Devils; extending their win streak to three games. Despite the final score, the game was far from an easy victory for the Trojans, as they had to overcome a Martensdale-St. Mary’s lead late in the game to pull out the win. The Pleasantville boys are now 14-2 overall and 10-2 against conference opponents.
The night was also the shared “Hoops for Hope” Coaches versus Cancer game for both schools, and saw them eclipse their goal of $5,000 raised for cancer research.
Both Pleasantville basketball teams will take on Lenox on Friday.
