The PCM basketball teams played inspired basketball on Friday night in Monroe, blitzing Grandview Park Baptist for a 56-35 girls basketball win, the trouncing the Defenders 68-49 in the nightcap to complete the sweep. It was a special night for both squads, as they held their annual Coaches versus Cancer game, along with Senior Night recognitions.

In the girls’ game, freshman Courtney Van Houweling opened up the game with an 8-point first quarter to put PCM up over the Defenders 16-10 on her way to a team-best 20 points. Up 32-17 at the half, the Mustangs held Grandview Park Baptist at bay the rest of the way out to claim the 21-point win. Kaitlyn Wilkie complimented Van Houwling’s night with 12 points of her own.

PCM Girls Head Coach Brett Grier said the very low number of turnovers was key. The Mustangs committed just 9 turnovers in the game, after entering the contest averaging nearly three times that amount. The PCM girls are 12-8 overall in the season and 9-9 in Heart of Iowa Conference play.

In the nightcap, the PCM boys would go without their leading scorer, Scott Bruxvoort, but it would not be a problem for the Mustangs, as Jordan Van Roekel picked up the slack and led the team with 19 points. The Mustangs now advance to 18-2 overall in the season and 16-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference play as they also clinched the Heart of Iowa Conference title.

You can catch a delayed broadcast of the game on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. on 92.1 KRLS.
