A pair of local stand-outs on the football field this past season have been selected to play in the Iowa Shrine Bowl football game this summer. Pella High’s Grant Gustafson and PCM’s Hutch Burns were each named to the South squad for the 40th annual game, which showcases pre-college athletes from across the state.

Gustafson was Pella High’s second-leading tackler, notching 83 stops from his linebacker position, and recovered 3 fumbles during the 2011 season. He also scored 7 touchdowns as the starting fullback for the Dutch; who went 10-2 and reached the Class 3A State Quarterfinals.

Hutch Burns was also a vital asset to a team that made the State Quarterfinals, as PCM went 11-1 in Class 2A action. As a running back, Burns ran for the fourth most yards in all of Class 2A – 1,634 – and also scored 24 touchdowns as part of a high-flying PCM offensive attack. Burns also made his presence known on defense as a linebacker for the Mustangs.

Both players will try and help the South squad get closer to evening the all-time series, which currently stands at 20-18-1, in favor of the North. The South won last year’s game 17-14.

The 2012 Iowa Shrine Bowl will be held on July 21st at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.
