Nearly every team in sports has its ups and downs, and it was certainly no different this past season for the Pella High boys basketball team.  What can definitely be said about this year’s Little Dutch squad is that there was no shortage of impressive wins for the team.  Pella High head coach Mark Core says those strong performances started with key wins over conference opponents, and was capped off by an impressive, late-season victory in non-conference play.

“We did have big wins against conference foes.  We swept Norwalk; we swept Oskaloosa; we got wins against both Pella Christian and Grinnell.  So there were some highlights within our conference,” said Core.  “I think probably the single biggest highlight was a spectacular performance [in a 69-58 win] over Harlan on a Saturday night over at West Des Moines Valley.  That certainly gave us a lot of confidence that we could play with anybody.”

The Pella High boys basketball team finished the 2011-12 season with a 14-8 overall record and went 9-3 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.  Their season came to an end in the District Finals against Grinnell, a team that not only qualified for the State Tournament, but that is now looking at a chance to make the championship game.  The Tigers face Mount Pleasant in today’s Class 3A Semifinals.
