Relying upon their bench to provide the team with some added depth, the Central College softball team earned a pair of victories Sunday night as they continued play at the Tucson Invitational Games. The Dutch got a one-hit shutout from freshman pitcher Mallor Schulenberg in a 6-0 victory over Nazareth College, the ripped Edgewood College for 19 hits in a 14-1, six-inning triumph in the late game.

Against Nazareth, Schulenberg dueled against Kelly Kocher, who led NCAA Division III in strikeouts per inning, but missed last season with injury. While her pitching limited the Dutch to just five hits, Central was able to take advantage of seven walks to score their runs. Offense was not a problem against Edgewood, though, as a nine-run sixth inning busted open a 5-1 game. Catcher Kyrie Hale continued her early season offensive onslaught, as one of four Dutch players with three hits. She is batting a team-best .615 on the season.

The Dutch are now 5-1 on the season, with another doubleheader scheduled for tonight. They’ll face No. 15 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps first, before taking on Nazareth again in the late game.
