A number of local track and field squads are in competition today, some for the first time this season. Melcher-Dallas sends their girls squad to Albia, Twin Cedars has their boys program at Belle Plaine and the girls teams from Knoxville and Twin Cedars will each be at Clarke in Osceola. Sabers’ head coach Dennis VerPloegh says he likes the competition his squad will face.

“That meet will be a good meet for us. It’s a nice test. There will be four other Bluegrass [Conference] schools there and Martensdale-St. Mary’s and Van Meter come down – and they are a couple of perennial powerhouses,” said VerPloegh. “It’ll give us a chance to see how we compare against some really good teams and how we compare to some of the teams in our conference.”

The meet at Albia begins at 4:15 p.m., Belle Plaine’s meet starts at 4:30 p.m. and the competition at Clarke is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. this afternoon.
