This spring figures to be another strong one for the Pella High girls track and field team, as the Lady Dutch aim to maintain their spot atop the Little Hawkeye Conference and make some noise in the postseason. A total of 36 girls make up this year’s squad, and Pella High girls’ head coach Dak Rasmussen says that total contains an exciting blend of leadership and youth.

“We’ve got a nice mix, too, a balance between classes. We’ve got the juniors and seniors that have been there before – they’ve been to State, they’ve been to Drake [Relays] – they know what to expect; and then we’ve got the excitement and enthusiasm of the freshmen coming in,” said Rasmussen. “Those girls are seeing things for the first time, but bringing a lot of talent with them. That’s a nice mesh you like to have”

That mix is led by 8 seniors and 9 juniors, but also includes 9 sophomores and 10 freshmen. The Lady Dutch have a handful of indoor competitions right in front of them, as they’ll run in tomorrow’s Little Hawkeye Conference meet in Grinnell, followed by indoor competition at Central College and in the Dickinson Relays for the State Indoor Meet at the University of Northern Iowa on Tuesday.
