Former Knoxville High School runner Alex Edwards was one of a quartet of freshmen that broke a decades-old Central College record in the Distance Medley Relay at the Drake Relays on Saturday. Crossing the finish line in 10 minutes, 3.25 seconds, the squad took fifth place in the college division and broke the Central College record – set in 1980 – by over seven seconds. The Dutch also contested the finals of the 4×100 relay, with the team of Trevor Veach, Logan Danko, Kyle Wood and Allen Scovel taking fourth in the college division with a time of 41.39 – just shy of their season best.

Central also sent a contingent of athletes to the Kip Janvrin Open Friday night, highlighted by a pair of women’s shot put performances. Morgan Darrow made a strong bid for a national berth with a mark of 44 feet, 5.5 inches to take second overall while teammate Bry Pierce was fourth with a mark of 42-4.75. Those performances rank them ninth and 27th respectively in Division III. The top 22 women earn NCAA bids. Central will travel to Monmouth, Illinois. next weekend for the Monmouth Invitational, the final regular season meet before the Iowa Conference championships May 10-12.
