Local Girls Golfers Hopeful to Meet Goals in Tournament at PCM

A streaking PCM girls golf team has an opportunity to put their skills up against some of the area’s best competition at today’s Mustang Girls Classic in Monroe. It’s been a record-breaking season for the Mustangs, and head coach Val Edwards says her team is gunning for an even better showing at the Gateway Golf Course.

“We keep telling the girls we’d like to break a record on our home course. We haven’t done that, so that would be great,” said Edwards. “We do have some really tough competition, though. We have South Tama and Grinnell [coming in] which will be really tough, but that’s just another challenge for the girls.”

Along with the Trojans and the Tigers, girls golf teams from Pella Christian and Pella High are also in the field. Lady Dutch head coach Wade Van Vark says his emphasis lately has been all about identifying individual progress.

“We’ve had several girls individually turn in scores better each time they’ve been on the course. If you look at the scorecards you can maybe see a girl who’s off to a bad start, but all of the sudden it clicked for her and she got better,” said VanVark. “That’s what we’re looking for – and I see it in every girl – is progress.”

For Pella Christian, head coach Larry Hessing says this meet is another opportunity to improve in several key aspects of the game of golf, but also a way to prepare for postseason tournament play.

“The consistency in terms of driving, putting and short game is definitely something we’re working on. Also, though, in the coming weeks we’re going to have some 18-hole tournaments – starting with PCM,” said Hessing. “It won’t be long before we’ll turn around and have the conference meet, and the District meet really isn’t that far away anymore.”

The Mustang Girls Classic, hosted by the PCM girls golf team, begins at 1:00 p.m. this afternoon at the Gateway Golf Course in Monroe.
