A dual between two of the top boys golfers in the area highlighted a competitive triangular hosted by Dallas Center-Grimes Thursday evening. PCM’s Hunter Van Veen and Pella High’s Lucas Boyd battled for the top individual score, with Van Veen carding a 35 and helping the Mustangs win the meet with a combined score of 156.

“Hunter is playing some really solid golf right now. His average so far this season in 35.5 per 9 holes,” said PCM boys head coach Michael Smith. “We knew today would be a pretty good test because he was going to be playing with Lucas Boyd from Pella. Lucas tied for medalist during the 3A state meet last year. I thought he handled himself very well.”

Boyd finished with a 37 to earn runner-up and Pella finished in third with a 169 – three strokes back of host Dallas Center-Grimes.

“This was another big win for us. Going against bigger schools is always a challenge and these boys were ready for that challenge,” added Smith. “I just love how they continue to fight during the whole round.”

The PCM boys are back on the course Monday at the West Marshall Invite, while the Little Dutch hit the hills of Pine Knolls Golf Course Saturday against Knoxville.
