Another chapter in the rivalry between athletic teams from Pella Christian and PCM was written Wednesday night, as the teams fought to a 2-1 Eagles’ win in overtime of the Class 1A Boys Substate Soccer Semifinals.

Both teams battled brutal winds throughout the night, with the Mustangs striking early in the first half.  That lead would stand until the 60th minute, when Seth Ruiter was able to sneak a goal past the PCM keeper.  After 20 more minutes of strong defense by both sides, the match was headed to a Golden Goal overtime.

The Mustangs’ had the wind to their advantage, and right when it seemed the Eagles were content to ride out the first bonus period and try and gain the wind back, an opportunity presented itself in the PCM box for Pella Christian’s Jordan Van Maanen, and he drove home the go-ahead goal.

Alek Vink had 13 saves for the Eagles, who advance to the Substate Finals in Nevada on Saturday to face the host Cubs.  Nevada breezed past Des Moines Christian 6-1 Wednesday night in their Substate Semifinal.
