The doubles team of Pella High’s Brannon Johnson and David Lapthorn have cleared the first big hurdle of the Class 1A Boys Individual State Tennis Meet, as the tandem picked up a pair of wins Friday to get to continue play on the second – and final – day of the tournament. Johnson and Lapthorn started the day with a 6-4/7-6(5) win over a team from Ballard, then fell to Davenport Assumption 1-6/2-6. Coming back in the Consolation Bracket and facing elimination, the duo defeated a team from Ft. Dodge St. Edmond 6-2/6-4. Johnson and Lapthorn will now face a tandem from Keokuk this morning for a chance to advance deeper in the tournament.
