The Marion County Board of Supervisors will consider bids on renovating the Courthouse elevator in upcoming months. A representative from Schumacher Elevator told the board that getting the elevator up to American Disabilities Act requirements would coast around $15,000. The next level would be a $60,000 upgrade to make sure the elevator is up to a national recommended fire safety code that may become Iowa law within a few years. $80,000 is the estimated cost to replace the whole elevator.

Upgrading the elevator in the Courthouse would take approximately six weeks. Many county departments would have to adjust in order to make sure their services were available to people not able to use stairs in the courthouse. If the elevator is upgraded, it probably won’t happen until after Election Day this fall.
