A pair of nail-biting, one-run victories for the PCM baseball team has landed the Mustangs in tonight’s Class 2A Substate Finals, where they’ll take on District 12 winner Ogden. The Bulldogs advanced by defeating Gilbert 4-1 on Saturday and come into the contest with a 23-10 overall record, while the Mustangs are a very comparable 21-10. PCM head coach Shawn Hudnut says he’ll draw upon previous experiences as his team prepares for tonight’s game.

“We’re familiar with Ogden. You know, Ogden used to be in the Heart of Iowa Conference – they left this year – so we didn’t get to play them this year,” said Hudnut. “They’ve got three quality pitchers. We’ll have to look and see who we get, and then from there we’ll go back and look at some of the stuff that happened last year when we played them. They’re a quality ball club, and at this point – when you’ve got sixteen teams left in the state – they’re all going to be very quality teams.”

PCM will be without the services of outfielder Kody Wilkie – who was injured yesterday in an automotive accident – and it is likely his fellow senior teammates will try and lead the rally to get the Mustangs’ back to the State Tournament.

Tonight’s Class 2A Substate Final between PCM and Ogden will be held at the Dowling Catholic High School baseball field in Des Moines; starting at 7:00 p.m. You can hear the live play-by-play on 92.1 fm KRLS with Eric Gotschall and Mark Amadeo there for the call.
