PCM’s Kingery Battling the Best in Bareback

Recent PCM graduate Dalton Kingery is facing some stiff competition as the week carries on at the 2012 National High School Finals Rodeo.

Kingery’s first round score of 63 in the Bareback Riding competition initially landed him in sixth place overall, but some hearty challengers from Canada and South Dakota – along with a host of other top-tier cowboys – have pushed his score down to 21st best overall. Bareback Riding has been a new pursuit for Kingery this year, and in an earlier interview on KNIA/KRLS, the former PCM wrestler said it is much more rough-and-tumble than his Saddle Bronc Riding.

“It’s a crazy event. I was kind of looking for a little spice, a little something to spark it off. It’s kind of a rough event. It’s like boxing and rodeo. You’ve got to be a fighter, and I kind of had a little fire in my personality; so I thought I’d try it out,” said Kingery.

“The adrenaline you get from it is crazy, and I love it. I was fortunate enough to be pretty successful in it. I just started this year and I climbed the standings pretty quickly in high school rodeo. It’s fun – it’s a lot more dangerous – but it’s fun.”

Dalton Kingery is one of several cowboys and cowgirls from Iowa that are representing their state well. Through the first round of competition across six performances, Iowa has 715 total points, positioning our state in 28th place out of nearly every state in the union, along with Australian states and Canadian provinces.

The second round of competition is now underway at the National High School Finals Rodeo, which is being held in Rock Springs, Wyoming.
