A pair of local volleyball teams are in action tonight – one of which gets in their first varsity competition of the season.

The PCM volleyball team hosts Greene County tonight, as the Mustangs gun for their second win of the season. The team has faced plenty of tough competition early on and has seen two of their senior leaders get off to impressive starts statistically. Hitter Abbi Gilson leads the team with 29 kills and has overpowered the opposition from the service line, where she is 77-of-80 with 15 kills. Teammate Alex Samson has been even more efficient as a server, where she is 44-of-45.

Just as impressive is what Samson has been able to do on offense. Sliding into the setter role was was vacated right before the season – due to the transfer of Sierra Scarnatti – Samson has stacked up 28 kills of her own, but also dished out 61 assists and is tied for the team lead in blocks with 16. The PCM volleyball team is 1-5 heading into tonight’s match, which starts with the freshman game at 5:00 p.m. in Monroe.

Twin Cedars also hits the volleyball court tonight – albeit for the first time this fall. The Sabers start the year with a preseason No. 12 ranking in Class 1A and bring back seniors Alee Hugen, Ayla Crosby and Payton Fee to lead the way. Hugen returns as the top hitter for Twin Cedars a season ago, while Crosby – the team’s setter – will again orchestrate the offense. The Sabers host Eddyville-Blakesburg tonight, starting with the JV match at 5:30 p.m.
