A group of 7th grade boys from Pella won the championship of the Pace Setter Great Four State Championship in Minneapolis over the weekend. Held at the Target Center, the tournament saw the team from Pella face squads from Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.
They opened up their run with a 47-25 win over North Dakota’s runner-up squad, then followed that with a 46-36 win against the Minnesota state champions from St. Paul. That landed Pella’s team in the championship game, where they claimed a one-point victory – 45-44 over South Dakota’s championship team; which was out of Aberdeen.
The 7th grade boys basketball team from Pella consisted of Grant DeMeulenaere, Landon Vander Leest, Avery Van Zee, Lucas Warner, Soren Steller, Luke Pavlat and Kaden Miedema; and qualified for the Pace Setter Great Four State Championship by winning the Iowa state championship in Cedar Falls on March 24th.
The squad wasn’t the only team in the Twin Cities that represented the Tulip City well, though. Another 7th grade squad – a girls team from Pella – finished fourth in their respective tournament. That squad had qualified by finishing second in Cedar Falls and also won the gold medal this July at the Iowa Games.
