Tuesday was a bit of a challenging one for the Dutch, as several of Central’s athletic programs ran into some tough competition. Here’s a recap of the action on the day:
Right-side hitter Liz Ihnen pounded a career-high 17 kills but 18th-ranked Wartburg College rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Central College volleyball team 20-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-17 Tuesday night in Pella. Ihnen posted a sizzling .484, committing just two errors. She also had four blocks. The Dutch are 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the Iowa Conference. They’ll take the weekend off before traveling to Cedar Rapids next Tuesday to face Coe College.
Despite a 13-9 shot advantage, the Central College men’s soccer team fell 2-0 to No. 18 Washington University-St. Louis Tuesday in Pella. The Bears, a perennial NCAA Division III tournament participant, opened the scoring in the second half, icing the victory in the 71st minute. The loss drops the Central College men’s soccer team to 2-3-1 overall. They’ll meet Elmhurst College on Sunday in their final tune-up before starting Iowa Conference play.
Despite a fast start in doubles, the Central College women’s tennis team suffered its first loss of the season, 5-4 at Simpson College Tuesday. The Dutch had a shot at sweeping doubles play, but were edged out at No. 2. Simpson took four wins in singles to pull out the win after Central claimed victories at No. 1 and No. 5 singles. The Central College women’s tennis team is 3-1 on the season and will travel to Monmouth, Illinois on Saturday to face host Monmouth College and Knox College.
Overcoming windy conditions, the Central College men’s golf team score an encouraging third-place finish at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Invitational Tuesday. Competing in the non-Division I portion of the tourney, the Dutch were the top Division III finisher in a six-team field. Central shot a 623. The University of Indianapolis was first in the non-Division I tourney and topped the Division I field as well with a 597. Justin Livingston tied for third at 150 as Central’s highest individual finisher. The Dutch are off until the University of Dubuque Invitational September 22-23 at the Dubuque Country Club.
