The Central College football team needed a big performance Saturday to regain confidence following a 47-28 thrashing by Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the season opener. The Dutch dominated most of their home opener against Augustana, eventually holding on for a 17-10 victory. Kevin Sheldon’s 27-yard first quarter field goal was the only scoring of the first half, despite the fact that Central journeyed inside the Viking red zone on three separate occasions. After a scoreless third quarter kept it 3-0 in favor of Central, the Dutch drove deep for a fourth time, finally putting it in the end zone on an Aaron Eisler touchdown run that put Central up 10-0. Augustana answered with a 32-yard field goal from Brady Rogers, but Central had a response of its own less than two minutes later as quarterback Jack Flaherty connected with Blaine Forsythe for a 49-yard score. Central had a chance to close out the game on defense, but Viking quarterback Nick Welch hit running back Eric Chandler for a 58-yard touchdown on fourth-and-10 with five minutes to go. After forcing a punt, Augustana had one last chance, which ended in an interception by Central’s Jacob Edelman. The Dutch are 1-1 on the season, and have their bye week on Saturday. They’ll return to action September 22nd at Albion of Michigan.
