The Knoxville Football Squad let its defense shine for the second straight week as the Panthers grinded out a 12-6 win over Newton last night. The Panthers were able to shut down the Cardinals’ running game holding them to just 68 yards on the ground while allowing only 75 yards through the air. The Panthers struck first late in the first quarter when Colton Spaur went in untouched from 18 yards out, the point after missed and Knoxville led 6-0 at the half. Another Knoxville score on third and long from the Newton 34 was capped off when Tanner Dunkin hauled in a 34 yard pass from Gerrit Davis to make it 12-0 after the two-point conversion was unsuccessful. Newton got on the board with a touchdown with less than two minutes remaining…however the ensuing onside kick went out of bounds and Knoxville ran out the clock. Coach Troy Rider said while the offense was not a thing of beauty the defense was the key. Spaur ran for 132 yards on 17 carries and a score to lead Knoxville’s ground attack, while Gerrit Davis was 3/6 for 42 yards and a touchdown. Knoxville is now 2-0 on the season and start District eight play next week by hosting Winterset.
