A Marion County native will be inducted into William Penn University’s Athletic Hall of Fame this Saturday. Mike Laird grew up in Attica and graduated from Twin Cedars High School and played on the 1974 Statesmen Basketball Squad that won the Iowa Conference and was also voted tennis team captain and team M-V-P in 1975. Where Laird made his biggest mark at William Penn was with the baseball program where he has been the current coach since 1982 racking up an impressive record of 851-and-418 where he has led the Statement to 11 conference championships. His 851 wins ranks him 11th on the all-time N-A-I-A list. He will be inducted with three other individuals this Saturday in Oskaloosa.
