Led by a first-place individual finish by Evan Jones, the Pella High boys cross country team continued their strong start to the season, leading the field of area teams with a team title at Tuesday’s Grinnell Invitational.

The Little Dutch finished with 28 points, well ahead of host Grinnell’s 108. The Knoxville boys took seventh for the second meet in a row; with PCM and Pella Christian taking 11th and 12th, respectively, to round out the field of local squads. Pella High landed five boys runners in the top ten, and all seven varsity runners made the top thirty. Knoxville was again led by Wick Cunningham, who finished second overall; while PCM and Pella Christian were paced by Matt Chizek (30th) and Jacob Lensing (56th).

In the girls’ race, Pella High led the area squads with a fourth-place finish, scoring 104 points and trailing Williamsburg, Grinnell, and Ottumwa. The Knoxville girls put up a score of 232 to take 9th place in the team standings. PCM’s Rachel Peter finished in 28th for PCM and Pella Christian’s Marina Shannon and Demaris Worthington finished within seconds of each other to claim 64th and 65th – leading the Pella Christian girls. Neither squad fielded a full varsity team.
