Pella High Cross Country Coaches Doug Cutler and Robin Hammann have done a phenomenal job with the sport for the school. They’ve taught their athletes about character, not giving up, playing as a team, and a lot of the values that take place in our everyday lives. Later this month, they will be showing what they can do during the Des Moines Marathon. Coach Cutler and Coach Hammann, as well as other Pella cross country coaches, will be running the marathon in honor of the late Pella Athletic Director, Bill Van Horn, who passed away earlier this year. The money raised will be going towards scholarships for athletes who want to continue to be involved in sports into their college careers. Coach Hammann says it was tough to decide what to do with the money raised. “We had talked about different organizations we could donate our pledges to,” assistant coach Robin Hammann said. “Some of those had to do with Bill’s illness and some of the support that he had had. Then, as this year transpired, and the year has changed things drastically, we decided that we would make our cause much more evident and actually supporting Bill’s legacy.” The coaches’ goal is $2,600, which they hope can be broken up into scholarships for the next several years. You can donate by writing a check out to the Pella Community High School and putting “Bill Van Horn” in the memo line, or you can go to www.pellacrosscountry.com and make your pledge at the bottom of the page by clicking on the “Donate” link.
