Plenty of Pumpkins Despite Drought

The drought did not have a significant impact on this year’s pumpkin crop. That’s according to Joy Pierce at Pierce’s Pumpkin Patch. Pierce says that pumpkins are more resistant to drought because they have a large tap root that can reach far beneath the soil for water. The rains came at the right time, Pierce adds, to ensure they have plenty of pumpkins this year. She says that gords and squash also came in well this fall, though their Indian corn did not do so well. Pierce’s Pumpkin Patch is one of eight local farms that will be part of Sunday’s Farm Crawl [1]. That event runs from 11am-5pm tomorrow.
