It was a good night for the Central Men’s and Women’s basketball teams as they soundly defeated both Grinnell and Monmouth, respectively, in their opening game of the 2012-13 season. The women trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, but went on a nice run in the second half to seal the victory late, by a final score of 63 – 56. Leading the way for the Dutch women was starter Kalli Richardson who contributed 17 points and six rebounds, while Bry Pierce was big off the bench, also contributing 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting. On the men’s side, despite turning the ball over 17 times to Monmouth’s 11, they were still able to come away with a 96 – 82 defeat of the Scots. Matt Greenfield dished in nearly a third of the Dutch men’s points on the night, with an output of 31 on 12-of-16 shooting, and Branden Stubbs added 21. Next up for the Central men’s basketball team will be another home game tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. against Fontbonne, Missouri, while the women will hit the road to Minnesota to play Crown in St. Bonifacius starting at 4:00 p.m.
