Despite the fact that they owned a 17 point lead with less than six minutes remaining, the Central College football team had to make a last second defensive stand to preserve a 31-28 win over Wartburg College Saturday afternoon. The Dutch scored four first half touchdowns and had a 31-14 lead before the Knights struck for two touchdowns in a four minute span late in the game. Wartburg recovered an onside kick with two minutes remaining, and drove to the Central 12. After an apparent go-ahead touchdown was pulled off the board due to a holding penalty, Wartburg faced fourth-and-two with the game on the line. After a big stop and three kneel-downs later, Central secured its fifth victory of the season, guaranteeing at least a .500 record, which it has done every season since 1961. The Dutch are 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the Iowa Conference, tied for second place with Buena Vista. Central travels to Cedar Rapids next Saturday for the season finale against Iowa Conference champion Coe.
